July 20 In a Wretched Cave--comments of English PatientI saw a film this midnight, I heard about it not long ago from somewhere. Admittedly, I thought a lot about it. I always know that it is convenient but foolish to imagine oneself to be the hero in some movie, acting, speaking, and experiencing the same as he or she did. But I know many would do that and find finally that what they actually face is not exactly the same as he or she imagines, always. However, fictions do not break, and I confess that I like fiction. That is where the magic lies. He hates ownership and to be owned. But as so-called suprasternal notch scene indicates, there is a passion for Almasy to own somebody or at least some part. Accurately, I think he is looking for a feeling, not different from Katharine, just a feeling of being togething, at present, not past, not future, but with the memory of the past and the expectation of the future. In a word, intellectual things must be real enough for him to touch, feel, and to "own". So does Katharine think, she said, "we are the real countries". And she wants such a place where she could just walk in with him, and friends, an Earth without maps. She died writing this, and he died listening to this, so they share one dream. Only love in this world can realise their dream. Good movie. Jul 15th 07 by Leon |
